Typical Day in Lockdown

Typical Day in Lockdown

Experience

I wake up a lot later than I would if I’d been at college. Then I’d message friends and scroll through social media and the news for a bit. I would then start the reading for my essay which is sometimes quite tricky since I have been unable to access some of the books on the reading lists. Once I start working, I’d probably do one article and then take a break. Breaks usually consist of watching Netflix on my laptop now (currently watching Stranger Things) because my desktop packed up and I can’t play games anymore. Tutorials from home are fine but sometimes the video lags and I have to ask the tutor to repeat what they said. I would then do another article and then have lunch with my dad and brother, who are both working from home as well. When lockdown started there were a few squabbles over where we would each work but everything has been resolved now.

After lunch I like to do baking and have taken this hobby up whilst at home and have been experimenting with banana bread and lemon cake. Whilst the cake is in the oven I normally go on my laptop again and start researching work experience opportunities and looking at things to build my CV. My work experience at a law firm was postponed and another vacation scheme I had applied to was cancelled. I’m grateful for all the virtual insight events put on by the Careers Service however this part of lockdown has affected me the most. It is depressing that everything has been cancelled and I’m now quite anxious that I don’t have enough on my CV.

I have also been working on some creative writing since lockdown started since there is nothing much else to do, really. I’ve tried to keep myself motivated but this term but it has been very hard. I had been really looking forward to Trinity because I wanted to get more involved in Oxford life, maybe audition for a play, join a new society or make some new friends. That obviously hasn’t happened and now that I’m going into my final year I can’t help but feel conscious of everything I wanted to do at university but haven’t been able to.

In the evening I normally eat dinner with my brother and then my family and I might watch a movie. At the end of every day I’ll call my boyfriend and we’ll chat for an hour or so before I go to bed.
