Story

William Butland joined the Navy in 1914 having changed his birthdate by 15 months. He served on HMS Argyll form 16th March 1914 then went to the shore station HMS Vivid from 17th April 1914. He became Chief Petty Officer on 8th April 1914 on HMS Vivid until 10th October 1916. William joined the stock force on 15th December 1917. This being the Q ships, which were trawlers that had guns fitted inside the ship but from the outside looked like trawlers. They were used to try to entice German U boats to the surface enabling the Q ships to sink them.
