Story
Charles William was born abt 1885 in Ashill, Somerset to William Frederick & Fanny Back, William was a Stone Mason.
Before the war Charles was a House Painter and married Rhoda Smith. They were living at Smokey Bottom, Staple Fitzpaine in 1911 with their 2 children, one of which was handicapped. They had by that time a child which had died.
Charles was a Lance Corporal in the Somerset Light Infantry, regimental number 19195. He had fought at Passchendaele in Belgium.
He died of his wounds 23rd August 1917 at the Canadian Hospital Centre, and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
The family have heard of a ‘Penny’ unknown which was found within the family but do not know where it has gone. His name is on the memorial at Staple Fitzpaine.
On the 100th anniversary a peel was rung by the Staple Fitzpaine church ringers in August.
