Letter from 1918 addressed to James Jaybee Joyce of the Royal West Kent Regiment of the 6th Battalion from King George.
Joyce served in France on the Western Front.
The letter refers to time at Dulmen Camp after he was captured in November 1917.
Family story that he escaped POW camp on Dutch border. They were often brought out of the camp during the war. Dutch family took him in and he returned at the end of the war.
Joyce was 20 when he enlisted. DOB: 30/06/1897. He died in the 1960s.
Pamela Humphreys (James' wife) said he was very reserved after the war. Had lung problems maybe due to mining.
Survived the war but injured by POW camp.
Captured at Battle of Cambrai 30/11/1917.
Lived in Brixton, London.
Letter says he was ''released'' from POW camp but the story is he escaped, and helped others out too.
Known to have fought at Le Quesnoy.
He is the great-grandfather of the contributor.
