Rayner started the war in the Infantry, possibly as a Fusilier, but was wounded and sent home. After that he joined the Royal Flying Corps.

Troplet ended up with dementia and potentially suffered from shell shock.
After the war he became a clerk.
He was the youngest of five brothers. He was the only one to get married to his wife Rose.
