Story

Basil Maurice Kear was a 34-year-old teacher when the war broke out. Teaching was a reserved occupation, but Basil decided to join up in 1915. He served in the Worcestershire Regiment in Belgium, where he was wounded by a bomb explosion that killed his batman. He was transferred to London hospitals for 6 months before returning to the Worcestershire Regiment. He later served in the Artists Rifles (Service No. 7134).

Basil survived the war and worked as a teacher again. His skills as a cricket player served him well as the front, as he often caught hand grenades and threw them back to the German side.
