Story

Alexander Watson Forbes was my grandfather (father’s father). He was born on 11/02/1893 and was a fish buyer in Civvie Street. He served in the First World War as a sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders with service number S/6948. He served in France for the whole duration 1914-1918 but was wounded. He was awarded the DCM in 1918. We have a large frame containing hankies and postcards from the First World War. I can remember the frame always being in Grandmother’s house. The couple stayed at 162 Victoria Road, Torry, Aberdeen, Scotland. Alexander died on 07/05/1932 of tonsillitis, which might have been as a result of wounds. He was buried in Allenvale Cemetery, Aberdeen. The family spoke a lot about grandfather. His widow was left with three young children. I have a newspaper cutting about grandfather.
