Story
Kenneth Baylis Jarvis and his twin brother, Philip Baylis Jarvis, were born in Redditch in 1896, the sons of Walter and Emily Jarvis. The family lived in Archer Road, Redditch and attended St Stephen’s School. At the age of 14 in 1911 Kenneth was employed as a junior law clerk.
Kenneth Jarvis enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as Private 16/1964 on 10th December 1915 at Redditch. He was 19 years 5 months of age and prior to enlisting was employed as a coal merchants clerk. He was posted immediately to the army reserve before being mobilised on 4th September 1916. Kenneth embarked for France on 6th October 1916 and saw action on the Somme. He was admitted to hospital in Rouen, France on 13th November 1916 and invalided home to England on 1st January 1917 where he was admitted to the 4th Northern General Hospital in Lincoln. He was deemed fit enough to rejoin his regiment at a camp in Cork, Ireland on 10th April 1917 before being posted to Catterick. Kenneth was posted overseas to France on 4th April 1918. He was transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment, service no 50640, on 30th April 1918 with whom he served as part of the occupation force after the cessation of hostilities prior to being discharged from the army in April 1919. Sadly, his twin brother Philip was killed in action at the age of 21 during the battle of Passchendaele on 27th October 1917.
Returning to civilian life, Kenneth took up employment at Clarkes Spring Manufactures in 1924, remaining with the company until his retirement in 1964. He died in Redditch in 1975 aged 79.
