Story

William Coultas Robertshaw was born start of 1890, Scarborough, son of Jonathan and Emma Robertshaw; in 1891 he lived at 39 Cloudsdale St., Bowling, Bradford – Jonathan was a Clog Maker. William’s elder sister Hannah Mary Robertshaw, his senior by 12 years, later married Fred Lister and their daughter Gladys married William Edward ‘Bill’ Whitfield in whose possessions these items were found. In 1911 William Robertshaw was an Insurance Agent, living with his parents at 6 New Cross St., Manchester Rd., Bradford. The three brothers referred to were Arthur, John Oliver, and Wilfrid – their youngest brother Edgar was too young to have served. William’s sole legatee was his mother Emma (Register of Soldier’s Effects).

Bradford Roll of Honour records his address as 9 Hastings St., Marshfield; his enlistment on 2nd February 1916; and his unit as 42nd M.G.C. Buried St. Hilaire Cemetery, Frévent, Pas-de-Calais, France.
