Story

William Ramsay was my grandfather. He married Josephine Leslie Matthews on 09/06/1897 at Old Machar, Aberdeen. The Ramsay family had a draper’s business for many years in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, where William stayed. William enrolled in the 1st Battalion, Kincardineshire Volunteer regiment on 9 May 1917. He was in C Company, Stonehaven Detachment. I have his Mobilisation Orders which give his number as 359. I have his certificate of thanks for his service in the Volunteer Force issued by Winston Churchill, Secretary of State for War. It gives his number as 641234. William was discharged on 4th October 1919.

I have the Sugar Registration Card issued to Helen Ramsay by the Ministry of Food. Helen was the sister of William Ramsay.

William and Josephine Ramsay had a son, Hugh, who served in the First World War. His story is told in a separate entry in Lest We Forget.
