Story
Lawrence Millward (b. 1877) joined the 4th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in December 1915 in Sunderland – Private 31923. No overseas service. He became ill in August 1916. The photo is from the Royal National Chest Hospital in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. Lawrence is thought to be top left in the photo) He died there on 3rd June 1917. He’s buried at Tideswell, Derbyshire with a CWGC headstons along with 5 similar burials.
Frederick Millward (b. 1878), Lawrence’s brother, became Private 22682 in the Green Howards, Yorkshire Regiment in Middlesbrough. In March 1918 he fractured his ankle and was sent home. In Jan 1919 he was promoted to Lance Sergeant in the Yorks and Lancs Regiment. He was demobbed on 9th April 1919.
Lawrence is the contributor’s Great Uncle. Frederick is her Grandfather.
