Story
The contributors grandfather on her mother's side was William Atkinson who was born in 1898 in Northampton and served in two Battalions. He was wounded in the shoulder and walked around the battlefield and luckily found the English line. He was sent back for hospitalisation and was then sent home to work as a clerk.
He was given medals and the contributor's sister had them hanging in her house until they fell apart. When he used to see soldiers coming over the trenches in television documentaries about the First World War, he said ‘it was like that’ but he didn’t ever talk about the war other than that.
