Story
The contributor inherited the records from her grandfather on her fathers side, who died aged 85 surviving the war. He joined the Army in 1916 and was mad a 1st Class Signaller, he was sent to Arras and was based in a cave bigger than a Cathedral. He was captured by the Germans in March 1918 and probably worked on a farm in Germany. His family were told he was killed but then received a postcard in January 1919 showing he was alive but he had been ill so he hadn’t written earlier. The Germans gave prisoners the food they could give, he never said anything bad about the Germans.
