Private Tom Booth signed up for the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards in December 1915 but he also spent some time in the Royal Engineers. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal but for what is not clear as the event is missing from the regimental diary. Tom Booth was presented with a ‘chalice’ from St Ann’s in recognition of him winning the DCM and is dated 25th August 1918. A piece appeared in the London Gazette describing how he was surrounded by the enemy (see photos) – this is not necessarily why he was awarded DCM. He was hospitalised on 27th September 1918 by a gunshot wound to the clavicle and was in hospital in Glasgow. He was demobilised in 1920. Tom didn’t speak about his war service during his lifetime. His grandson found the medal and did some research.
