Story
My grandfather, William Sugden, enlisted into the Army with his brother, George Sugden (my great uncle) on 2nd August 1916 – 1/7th West Riding Regiment (later: Duke of Wellington Regiment).
When the lads were talking about joining up they lived at home, 40 Carpenter Street, Laisterdyke, Bradford with their mother, father and younger siblings. Their mother was ill and it has come down through the family that she said “I hope my chin is tied up before you two go in there”. Source: Eileen Bland nee Sugden (William’s eldest daughter)
Prior to serving in WW1, William was employed at Messrs Whitehead & Sons, Laisterdyke, Bradford along with his brother, George Sugden. The lads came home on leave in November 1916 for William’s marriage to Eliza Duffy on 11th November 1916 – William’s brother, George Sugden and Eliza’s sister, Kitty Duffy, were best man and bridesmaid – See Wedding Photograph
The lads returned to the front line and Eliza worked in the munitions factory at Crofts, Thornbury, Bradford. William served at Messines, he sustained two injuries, head wound (shrapnel) when his brother, George was killed in action (08.10.1916) at Passchendaele. William’s knee cap was shot out in August 1918. He was demobilised in November 1916.
After the war, William returned to Messrs Whitehead & Sons, where he completed over 50 years of knee brace for many years and received a war pension for the remainder of his life service. William and Eliza lived at 66 Joseph Street, off Leeds Road, Bradford for several years. They had five children: John, Bernard, Eileen, Kathleen and Leslie. Sadly, their first son, John, died in infancy.
When Eliza died on 3rd November 1953, William went to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Michael Bland and their family for the rest of his life. William died at home on 7th March 1974, from old age. He was survived by 4 children and 14 grandchildren. He is buried at Bowling Cemetery, Bradford with his beloved wife, Eliza.
