Story
George was the uncle of Menston resident Joe Dixon. He was in the Territorials [9th Btn.] in 1913 and then joined the Durham Light Infantry. George was killed with many others on the 5th November 1916 aged 21 years near the hated Butte de Warlencourt. The Butte, an ancient chalk hill, was fortified by the Germans and was regarded as an iconic site in the war. After the war, King George and the Prince of Wales visited the site.
Unfortunately, George has no known grave but is probably amongst those who lie as unknown soldiers in several local cemeteries.
