Story

Joseph Armstrong was the maternal uncle of Menston resident Joe Dixon. He joined the Royal Naval Division, was in Gallipoli, then transferred to the Royal Navy. He was with H.M.S Resolution in the famous blockage when they rammed the German ships in Zebrugge.

Joe was on HMS Imphenia, the third vessel to be scuttled. The navy then scuttled one of their own ships to completely block the entry to the port to stop German U-boats in or out. Regarded almost as a suicide mission, just a few men were killed but Joseph survived with just a tracer scar on one knee.

After the war, Joseph returned to the mines and remained a pit man for 46 years. He died on the 25th February 1975.
