Group photo that includes Dave’s maternal grandfather, Wilfred Place Rivis, second row from the back, standing on the far left of the photo. His brother, Reginald Ramsden Rivis, is standing next to him. They are wearing the uniform of the Yorkshire Hussars.
Full title from 1864: Alexandra, Princess of Wales’ Own Yorkshire Hussar Regiment of Cavalry. This was a yeomanry regiment, and the yeomanry was not intended to serve overseas, but in 1899 a Royal Warrant permitted this, and men from three battalions served in the Boer War as part of the Imperial Yeomanry.
There is a photo of four soldiers dressed in this uniform on horseback, taken in Helmsley market-place.
Wilfred would have been too young to serve in the Boer War. In 1907 The Territorial and Forces Act brought the Territorial Force into being as a home defence force during wartime. Members could not be compelled to serve outside the country. However, on the outbreak of war many members volunteered, and the TF units were split during August/September 1914 into 1st line (liable for overseas service) and 2nd line (home service for those in reserved occupations and those unable to serve overseas) units.

Story
Wilfred Place Rivis was born January 25th 1885, and died January 17th 1958. Wilfred would have been 29 years old at the beginning of the war. He was a farmer, and so in a reserved occupation. The family lived at Normanby, near Malton, North Yorkshire. He may have been a Reservist.
