Story

Charles is not a relative of H Swatten but he is the relative of Richard James East who owns the medal, 1914-15 star awarded to H Swatten SE-6631 A.V.C.

I believe that his name was Harry Swatton, his medal card was marked with ‘correct surname Swatton’ and that the AVC was in fact the RAVC the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Harry was in the AVC regimental number SE/6631 as a Private and later as a Corporal. He served in the Western Front, France & Flanders. In 1918 he was listed as sent to class Z (this was a reserve contingent of previously enlisted soldiers now discharged).

Harry was born 9th July 1885 in Liddington, Wiltshire to Henry & Fanny Swatton who was a groom. Harry was not the only son who went into the RAVC, his younger brother Richard also served but was killed in France 1916. In 1901 they were both grooms and their father was an Ostler (Groom).

Harry survived the war and in 1939 was an Office Caretaker living in Swindon with his wife Ivy. He died in 1961 still living in Swindon.
