Story

Robert (Bob) was the grandfather of Robert Arthington. He was born 24th April 1898 in to Benjamin and Henrietta Arthington a Wool Sorter in Bradford Yorkshire. Robert joined up when he was 16 years old but actually got his call up papers when he was 18 and was already recovering from his injuries.

He was a Private in the Prince of Wales Own (West Yorkshire regiment) regimental numbers 3859 & 241314. He had enlisted 4th January 1915 serving in France. He was discharged as no longer fit to fight in March 1918 due to having received a gunshot wound to his right knee which he received in April 1917 and the shrapnel remained. The family received a letter to say he had been injured in action twice.

Robert went on to marry Janey Osborne in 1920. He worked at the Leather Mercery Warehouse. He died in December 1995 aged 97. The grandson Robert has photos of his grandfather relating to his training and service in France. He also has letters which have been passed down to him.
